The short version
Paragliding sites around Lonavala and Pawna Lake near Kamshet: launch areas, distances from Pune and Mumbai, where to stay and how to plan a flying weekend.
Why the Lonavala-Pawna belt is paragliding country
The stretch between Kamshet, Pawna Lake and Lonavala is one of India's best paragliding corridors: west-facing ridges catch reliable evening breezes, the plateau offers multiple launch orientations, and landing fields sit beside accessible roads. It is why most tandem flying in this region happens here rather than in Lonavala town itself.
When people say 'paragliding in Lonavala' they almost always mean the Kamshet sites a short drive away. Our Kamshet site guide explains the ridge geography, and our Lonavala page covers the hill-station side of the plan.
The main flying sites
Kamshet's core sites include the Shinde Wadi and Tower Hill areas - classic launches with dependable evening lift in season - plus orientations that work across different wind directions. Pawna-side launches add lake views at altitude. Site choice on a given day depends on wind direction, which is why your operator picks the launch on the morning itself.
You do not need to know the sites in depth - you need to know that the belt gives pilots options, which is what keeps cancellation rates lower here than at single-launch destinations.
Distances and getting there
Kamshet sits roughly 45-50 km from Pune and around 100-110 km from Mumbai via the expressway - about 1.5 hours and 2.5-3 hours respectively in normal traffic. From Lonavala the flying sites are about 20-30 minutes. The last stretch is rural road; allow buffer and follow the operator's live location rather than an old pin.
Rail travellers can use Kamshet or Lonavala stations and arrange a pickup. A cab booked for a flexible window works better than a strict schedule, because flying time depends on the day's wind cycle - our Mumbai-side guide covers the same logistics from the city direction.
Where to stay for a flying weekend
Options cluster around Pawna Lake (lakeside camps and resorts), Lonavala town (hotels of every budget) and the Kamshet village belt closer to the sites. Staying near Pawna keeps you within 20-30 minutes of most launches and turns a weather hold into a pleasant lakeside wait.
For a dedicated flying trip, our accommodation page lists stay arrangements near the sites. Book weekend stays early once the season is underway - October onward the belt fills with both flyers and general Lonavala tourists.
Flying over this landscape
The reels below show what the Pawna-Lonavala belt looks like from the harness - lake, ridge and green valley in a single frame. It is the visual reason this corridor is worth the drive.

Building a full Lonavala paragliding weekend
A strong plan: arrive Saturday, fly the evening window, stay near Pawna, and Sunday morning take a second slot or explore Lonavala's viewpoints and forts. That structure gives you two chances at flyable air - the single best hedge against a weather hold - plus a real weekend instead of a rushed commute.
Tell us your dates and group size through contact and we will suggest the site, slot and stay combination that fits. The joyride options page covers every tandem format available across the belt's sites.
Forts, viewpoints and food stops nearby
The belt's non-flying highlights cluster within 30-40 minutes: Lohagad and Visapur forts for a morning hike, Tiger's Leap and Lion's Point for the classic Lonavala valley views, and Pawna Lake's shoreline for an easy sunset after landing. Bhaja and Bedse caves add a quiet heritage stop on the old highway side.
Food-wise, Lonavala's chikki shops and the dhabas along the old Mumbai-Pune road are the dependable choices. If your group is mixing flyers and non-flyers, these stops give the ground crew somewhere to wait comfortably while the sky decides.
A sample two-day flying weekend
Day one: leave Mumbai or Pune early, check into a Pawna-side stay, report for the afternoon/evening slot, fly, then dinner by the lake. Day two: morning sightseeing or a fort walk, brunch in Lonavala, and a relaxed drive home. If Saturday's weather holds, Sunday becomes your retry window rather than a wasted booking.
