What tandem paragliding in Kamshet actually is

Tandem paragliding is the simplest way to fly: you sit in a comfortable harness in front of a certified pilot, run a few steps downhill, and the wing lifts you both into the air. There is no jumping off a cliff, no freefall, and no training required — the pilot controls the glider completely while you enjoy the flight.

Kamshet is where tandem paragliding in Maharashtra actually happens. The village sits in the Sahyadri foothills between Pune and Lonavala, with a chain of low ridges facing the westerly breeze and a huge safe landing zone — the same geography that made it the country's oldest training ground. Sites like Tower Hill and Shelar give flights of 400–700 metres above the Pawna Lake basin.

Every tandem flight with Paragliding Mantra includes the complete package: a certified EN/LTF wing, harness and helmet, a reserve parachute, transport up to the takeoff point, and a 5-minute pre-flight briefing. Your pilot is APPI-rated and has flown these ridges thousands of times — you bring shoes you can jog in, we handle everything else.

Why Kamshet, and not anywhere else near Pune or Mumbai

There are closer hills and cheaper-looking offers, but Kamshet works because of geometry: the ridge line faces the prevailing westerly wind square-on, the landing field is wide and flat, and the Pawna basin below gives you a landmark-rich view that a random hilltop can't match. It's the only spot within two hours of either city where flying happens reliably six months a year.

That reliability is also why the pilots are here. Kamshet is home base for most of Maharashtra's professional tandem and instructional pilots — which means when you fly here, you're flying with people who know this exact air, not operators visiting for a weekend.

Which tandem flight should you book

All tandem flights launch from the same Kamshet ridges with the same safety standard — the difference is time in the air and how much of the flying you get to experience yourself. Pick based on what you want out of the day:

Most first-time flyers choose the classic tandem and immediately wish they'd booked the instructional one — the extra airtime is where the flight stops being a ride and starts feeling like flying.

  • Classic Joyride (₹3,000–₹3,500) — 8–12 minutes of pure passenger flying over the ridge and lake basin. The default choice for a first flight, a surprise, or a bucket-list tick.
  • Instructional Tandem (₹4,000–₹4,500) — 15–25 minutes when conditions allow, with the pilot explaining each input and often letting you feel the controls. The closest thing to a lesson in a single flight.
  • Acro Adventure (₹4,500–₹6,000) — wingovers, spirals and SAT-style manoeuvres with an acro-rated pilot. For thrill-seekers who found the classic ride too gentle.

Flight day — how it actually runs

You book a slot, we confirm the weather window the evening before, and you meet at the Kamshet base or get picked up as arranged. From there it's a 15–20 minute drive up to the takeoff, a short briefing on launch and landing posture, a few steps of downhill run — and you're airborne.

In the air, the harness feels like a reclining chair. The pilot steers along the ridge where the wind gives lift; on a good evening you'll soar with eagles and watch the forts of Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona line up across the Pawna basin. Landing is a gentle flare into the open field near the lake.

GoPro video is available as an add-on and honestly worth it — the lake footage is the part everyone wishes they'd bought afterwards. Friends and family who aren't flying can watch launches and landings from the field.

Sunset tandem paragliding over the Pawna Lake basin, Kamshet

Best season and time of day

The season runs October to May, with flights in two daily windows — roughly 7–11 am and 3–6 pm — because midday thermals make the air bumpier. October to February is the sweet spot: stable westerlies, cool air, and the lake still full and blue after the monsoon.

Sunset slots are the premium experience — calmer air, longer shadows across the water, and the forts turning gold. They also book out first, especially on weekends in November and December.

The one honest variable is weather. Paragliding is wind-dependent, and a responsible operator reschedules marginal days rather than forcing a bad launch. If your slot moves, it's because we prioritized flying you safely over flying you on time.

Safety — what's actually protecting you

Tandem paragliding's safety record comes from layers, not luck: a certified EN/LTF wing inspected before every flight, a reserve parachute the pilot can deploy at any altitude, helmets for both of you, and a go/no-go weather decision made by someone whose reputation depends on making it conservatively.

Paragliding Mantra is a licensed APPI school (License No. 9), affiliated to the Indian Parachuting Federation — the FAI's Indian representative body. Your pilots hold APPI tandem ratings, fly these specific ridges daily through the season, and carry the kind of local knowledge that only comes from thousands of launches off the same slopes.

If you have a heart condition, a recent surgery, or are pregnant, tell us before booking and we'll give you a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.

Who can fly — age, weight, fitness

Almost anyone can fly tandem: typical limits are roughly 20–95 kg and ages 6 and above, with normal fitness — you need to be able to jog a few downhill steps on launch. We've flown nervous first-timers, grandparents, kids on birthday surprises, and wheelchair users on custom setups with advance notice.

Groups are welcome — tandems fly one passenger at a time, so groups rotate through slots within the same window while everyone else watches from the landing field. Corporate groups and birthday surprises are both regular formats here.

Pawna Lake and the Kamshet paragliding ridge seen from the air

Getting there and making a day (or weekend) of it

Kamshet is about 55–60 km from Pune and 100 km from Mumbai via the expressway — most guests drive, but Kamshet railway station on the Pune–Lonavala local line works if pickup is arranged with your booking. The whole trip, door to door from Pune, fits in half a day.

If you want the full version, pair the flight with a Pawna lakeside stay — fly in the afternoon, then watch the same ridge you just soared over turn pink from a lakeside tent or cottage. Lakeside camping runs ₹1,500–₹3,000 per person with meals; our partner stay sits on the Pawna shoreline about 15 minutes from the launch sites.

Whatever format you pick, the slot is the thing to lock first — everything else (cab, camp, lunch plan) is easier to arrange around a confirmed flight window than the other way round.
